Tank Top Love

If it were up to me, I would dress this way all the time: tank top, skinny jeans (or shorts), and sandals. Warm, warm weather is my favorite, favorite, favorite. Even if the sun is not my skin's friend.

So when the time came to finally break out these $3 skinny jeans and still-on-sale-but-not-quite-as-insanely-so tank top, I was stoked. And I've got the pictures to prove it.

Tank: Aeropostale
Jeans: No Boundaries
Bracelet and Necklace: Katya Valera

And by the way, I really need new gold sandals. Yeah, "need." But I have looked everywhere, at least in person, and I literally don't think they make gold sandals. The pair in these photos that I've had forever must be the only pair in existence, I've come to suspect. And it's unfortunately high time for them to move on, as they've seen much better days. Maybe by next summer a pair will turn up....

So, are you as thrilled to death with summertime as I am? Or are you one of those weirdos lovely people already longing for sweaters?

Behind the Rain

Think about it. The first rain after the flood had to have been pretty terrifying. It had never rained before the flood, and when it did, it destroyed (just about) everything. So the next time it rained, as it's now been doing for centuries and centuries, how do you think that happening was received?

We know it was just God's new way of taking care of the earth, but they probably didn't know that. And even once it had rained a few times, I'm sure it was still scary, and also unfamiliar. They weren't used to this water falling on their heads, and they probably didn't like it a whole lot. At least not how a lot of us love the occasional rain shower, especially in the hot summertime.

Rain can easily be seen as a negative thing--ya know, don't rain on my parade, etc. Yet we know it's good, and a lot of us love it. And we love it now because we know it's good. We know God's not going to destroy the earth with it, that it's His way of watering His creation, and that He's really providing for us with it. It's part of His perfect plan.

We've learned that this amazing happening is a good thing--even if it ruins parades or cancels plans or, in my case, makes the pain go up a notch or two. And because we're convinced of its goodness, we're thankful for it and embrace it and can see the beauty in it.

So, what if the other unpleasant things that happen in our lives--anything, you name it--are actually God's way of providing in ways we don't even realize? In ways that we may never understand while here on earth, but just as surely regardless of our lack of understanding.

I think that we have every reason to trust that this is the case.

That maybe, just like the rain, every raindrop, every happening, every diagnosis, every pain is somehow, inconceivably beautiful. In ways we cannot understand but yet trust. Because we know and can trust the One in charge of the clouds.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:8-11)

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Today I'm grateful for the rain and the promises behind it.

Wellness Wednesday: How I Lost 25 Pounds [the Healthy Way]

I've been wanting to share this losing weight thing with you guys for a while: how I lost 25 pounds without exercising, and while being healthy. I kinda hate to refer to it as a "diet" because the goal of it was not to lose weight but to become healthy--and through that, the weight inevitably came off. So when I say "diet" in this post, know that I mean "what you eat" and not "weight loss scheme" okay? And of course, exercise is ideal when you're wanting to get healthy, but during the time of starting this diet, I was definitely not able to exercise.

I shared a few weeks ago about a few of my many kinds of treatment for my many health problems, one of them being a gut repair diet to, obviously, heal my insides from the damage of gluten and all kinds of things over the years. I'm sure you've seen me refer to it like every time I post a recipe. This is called the Repairvite Diet, which, as it sounds, is intended to repair your insides, and it was followed by the Clearvite Diet to detox your system. As soon as I started the Repairvite Diet, I started losing about 3 pounds a week. Most people are on the diet for only about two months or less, but I kept encountering my own strange problems and so had a lot of setbacks that no one else ever has that prolonged the conclusion of it, so I was on it for a good five months. However, I simply stopped losing weight about two months in because I didn't need to lose any more. And I've stayed at that same weight since. I'm not a twig, as you can see in my pictures; I'm just where I need to be. And if I added exercise, you can bet any leftover flab would go away.

So, what does it entail, if I lost all this weight without exercise? A healthy diet. That's it. I took the Repairvite supplement, whose goal is of course to help repair my gut, but it's not required, and this diet is healthy for anyone, leaky gut or not. Without even exercising, simply removing all the crap of pop and refined sugars and more made me lose all that extra weight. Exercising would have really moved it along and helped me get even healthier.

But here's the deal with getting healthy and losing weight: If you want a change, whether you have health problems that need help, or you're overweight, or you just have those few last ten or fifteen pounds to lose, you have to want it. I was so desperate for health that I was willing to do things, like change my diet, that I would once have thought pretty radical and crazy and that I would never do. But I gave up favorite foods--for over half a year now--in this quest for health. I guess I had a choice, but as I see it, I really didn't. You have to want to feel better and be better. And f you really want to change, you'll do what it takes.

This diet is all about replacing unhealthy foods with healthy versions and removing processed, harder to digest foods in favor of clean ones. You don't have to go without chocolate and ice cream and cake and all that gluteny, sugary goodness you love. There are healthy versions of just about anything, "healthy" meaning gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, soy-free, and corn-free, among other things. There is no counting calories or anything like that. You can eat as much as you want of all the foods allowed on this diet. So, ideally, you don't really get hungry. This keeps your blood sugar regulated, which keeps your brain and body in gear.

An average meal on this diet, for me, is Easy Turkey and Veggie Fry. Or Honey Balsamic Chicken. But there are so many more options than those--I've just found a few I love and stick to them for a while, and then I find new ones to add. My mom started the diet several months after me and has her own recipes she's come up with and lives on. Being limited in the kinds of food you can have does not at all mean that you have to eat what's boring or things you don't like. I love the meals I eat on this diet and, if I ever go off it, I plan to keep them around because they're so good.

I'm continuing this diet for now, even though I've finished my time on the supplement, because I'm slowly testing what foods my stomach can handle. Right now I'm good with eggs, but corn is still being determined. There's a good chance I'll always be mostly on this diet, simply because eating well to get healthy is not something you do for a couple months and then go back to eating your Big Macs. This is a lifestyle change, and a consciousness of exactly what you're putting into your body.

Looking back before this diet, I can't believe how healthy I eat now compared to where I was a year ago. I also can't believe how many healthy foods I love now that I used to think were nasty; I just had to figure out a better way to make them--shocker, there's more ways to eat carrots and broccoli than just raw. Like Easy Fried Broccoli.

All this to say, you really can eat healthy, get your stomach functioning how it needs to, and feel better--not with some crazy pill, or starving yourself, or working out like a maniac and eating nasty foods. But just by taking the time to change what you eat--and discover meals you absolutely love that are also good for you.

This is all just from my own personal experience--you can read more about the Repairvite Diet here and here and, if you're interested, the Clearvite Diet here, and I highly recommend following the advice of a doctor like mine in your area over my advice, as I'm clearly not a doctor. I'm not getting paid anything to tell you about this diet (wouldn't that be nice!), just trying to pass along the good news that losing weight isn't as impossible or miserable of a journey as you might think. :)

The Copycat Songbook

Happy July, huh? Holy crap, here we are already, but there's nothing we can do about it, so three cheers for summer! Every time we complain about how cold and snowy it is, we wind up here in hot humid happiness, and I love it. :)

So I guess it's gonna be music week around here, after yesterday's post and now this. But if y'all are good with that, you know I sure am!

Okay, maybe it's just me, maybe I'm crazy, but over the years I keep noticing songs that sound like other songs. I know, there's nothing new under the sun, and some creations are simply gonna overlap others--it's inevitable. But when a song starts playing and really needs to go into a certain, totally different other song ... or when a chorus sounds like it really ought to lead into a completely different existing song by a completely different artist in a completely different genre ... or when a brand-new, what-do-you-think-you're-doing-here hit song sounds like a plagiarized fragment of a classic? I take note. And they are lucky enough to make it into The Copycat Songbook. Hang on tight, cause this might get a little crazy.

Copycat #1
"Let Her Go" by Passenger
and
"Should've Said No" by Taylor Swift

The offending part in these two is the intro. That's it. But it's distinct enough, to me at least, that when Pandora started playing "Should've Said No" the other day, I thought it was "Let Her Go." Listen for yourself:

Copycat #2
"The Man" by Aloe Blacc
and
"Your Song" by Elton John

I cannot possibly be the only one who reeled a little mentally when first hearing "The Man." You just can't sing "... and you can tell everybody..." and not be singing "Your Song." You just can't--that phrase is taken, and way too much part of the heart of that song to use it in anything else ... especially something as ... deep ... as "The Man." I guess there are plenty of other songs that use five exact same words in their choruses, but.... Is it just me?

Copycat #3
"Undeniably You" by Avalon
and
"That's the Way It Is" by Celine Dion

Okay, how many of you have actually heard of Avalon? We're headed way back to 2001 with this one. But when I heard that song on the radio years ago, and we got to the chorus, every time I wanted the last line to go straight into "...and that's the way it i-i-is..." The entirety of the songs have the same musical feel to them, and I think you could just about sing either of them to the other's accompaniment, but when the hook of the song wants to be the same too? We've definitely got us a copycat. And I think Celine was there first, by just a tad.

Copycat #4
"Me and My Broken Heart" by Rixton
and
"Lonely No More" by Rob Thomas

I don't even have any idea who either of these artists are. But I do know that "Me and My Broken Heart" is new to the radio, and every time the chorus gets going, I really want the next line to be "I don't wanna have to pay for this..." Is it just me? Rob beat you to it, buddy. By a few years. Good chance the writers of "Me and My Broken Heart" had "Lonely No More" flitting through their psyche when this song came into being.

Copycat #5
"Raise 'Em Up" by Keith Urban (with Eric Church)
and
"Somebody Like You" by ... Keith Urban

Okay, copying someone else happens a lot, and you can't really blame any of the above. But it's worse when you copycat yourself. Come on, Keith... You can't tell me he has no idea he just copied, if my music education memory serves me correctly, at least four measures of his own song from several years ago. Unless you write so many you lose track. But I'm not even some huge Keith Urban fan and noticed this--this definitely trumps all the others I've listed. Hold on tight for this one when you get to the end of the verses. Sound familiar? (See very beginning of "Somebody Like You," or basically every verse... It's like deja vu, huh?)

So, am I crazy? A helpless over-analyzer? Or had you noticed any of these too?
Do you have some copycats of your own that you've noticed? I'd love to hear them!
